it is with
pleasure that I sit down to write A few
lines to you to let you know that
I am in good health. and I hope this
letter will find you enjoying the same
blessing. it is A plesant (pleasant) day but the
distand booming of the canon in the direction
of Maryaland (Maryland) (Maryland) tells that it is not A
plesant (pleasant) day there tonight. we shall be apt to
know the result. we hear but little news
off round. here. I saw an old soldier yesterday
and had A long talk with him he said
Mcclelan (McClellan, George Brinton (General)) 's guarding rebel property was
all sham that it was no such thing at all
that he was with him all through his
Campaign and that he never passed
A man without arresting him unless he
took the oath of alleigence (allegiance). there is A great
many in the hospital A few rod from
here. there is men there with both legs
off and with both arms off but they

cause that the brave Washington County (Washington County, New York)
regement (regiment) (123rd Regiment, New York) sinks in if need be. for we have
few cowards here now and thn (then) one
now and then. A Gen Reynolds (Reynolds, John Fulton (General)) we have
here but they are scarce I tell you
they had ought to be I think. one of
our men died in Philadelphia (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) with the
cholora (cholera) morbus he was sick about two
hours thare (there) was A man found where we
got of (off) the cars the next morning pined (pinned)
to the ground with A bayonet through
his forehed (forehead). A man in the Vermont (Vermont)
11 (11th Regiment, Vermont) was shot dead in A cornfield. the
man is to be hung. nigh (night) before last
A man was shot in the park with three balls
killing him instantly. last night John
Sherman (Sherman, John) A fellow that worked for
Mr. Henry Braymer (Braymer, Henry) and two others with him
were shot at twice. down by the city last
night I and Mike (MIke) went down to the river
just dark about A mile but saw

we got back that we had been
A little careless though as there
are A few this is spelling cessesionsist (secessionist) around
there. Frances (Frances) gets along harty so does
Thair (Thair) . but perhaps you would
like to know about our rations
we live rather tough. but we shall
get along better after we get
to it. if it dont turn out with
us as it did with the irishmans
horse. we had fresh beef today we
have so much bread so much meat
so much sugar rice beans coffee
soap and candles. we like our
officers furst (first) rate Captain
Wiley (Wiley (Captain)) is with us he does not
feel above his men. it was
along (a long) ride for us down here
we came right along night and
day it is poor land down here

I cut grass seed than to have
all the land I have seen since
we passed into Maryaland (Maryland) (Maryland) its hard

you get this and ask A great lot of

the way take good care of them
deserters we will be after them.
we all have enfield rifles they are A
going to [t---?] I would like to draw mine
on old Jackson (Jackson, Stonewall (General))   wouldent (wouldn't) he bound.
seemes (seems) as though he would I have been
around the Capitol once but did go
in to see about that post office
buisness (business) but I must close excuse
all mistakes. write soon give my
love to all enquireing (enquiring) friends
