Letter written by Rush P. Cady, lieutenant in the 97th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company K, to his mother, Mrs. Daniel Cady (Fidelia Palmer), of Rome, New York, January 3, 1863

PAGE IMAGESat. aft. 3 o'c. Jan. 3. '63. Dear Mother,

I have just been reading over the
last three letters from you, & a treat I have had.
All of your letters, so full of kindness & tender
loving counsels, so richly freighted with inter-
esting home news, & teeming with observations
which bring to mind all the glad memories
& pleasant associations of home & dear friends,
are indeed treasures to me, more highly
prized than I can express.

Today I have received a letter from Gustavus (Palmer, Gustavus M. (Captain)) ,
by Lieut. Rowan (Rowan (Lieutenant)) . He was getting along well. They
did all in their power, at Mrs. Bannerman (Bannerman (Mrs.)) 's,
to make him comfortable. His servant Rufus,
took care of him mostly.- he had not yet
applied for a furlough, but intended to do
so as soon as he could safely start for home.
Lieut. Rockwell (Rockwell (Lieutenant)) had called on him; he had
been trying to get a furlough, but had
not succeeded. You ask, whether he is
much of an officer & a man. He is quite

PAGE IMAGE Unpopular with the men of his own
company, as well as with the Officers,
especially the Col. He is rather disagree-
able in some of his ways. He has been
promoted to a 1st Lieutenancy, but
will get no higher, though the Captain-
cy (Captaincy) is vacant. I have heard the Col.
Say, that he will advise & request
him to resign, on acc't of his being so
obnoxious to his own Co.

I was well acquainted with Adj. Bacon (Bacon (Adjutant)) ,
having been with him in [Calling]
over a year. Saw him occasionally,
while in the army. He was a fine fellow
& highly esteemed by all his friends.

That article in the Citizen, in relation
to his death, was written, I think, by
Lieut. Curran (Curran (Lieutenant)) , of the 146th (146th Regiment) a classmate
of mine, & a fellow member of the Alpha Delta Phi Soer (Alpha Delta Phi) .
With Bacon (Bacon (Adjutant)) .

Please give my regards to Augusta (Augusta)
& Louise (Louise) , Collins (Collins) , Smith (Smith) , &c & give my
love to Aunt Calista (Calista (Aunt)) , Cous. Ann (Ann (Cousin)) & re-
member me to Uncle Nathan (Nathan (Uncle)) .

Your Son Rush (Cady, Rush Palmer) .
