Petersburgh June 17th Mr, Brown We had a hrad fight yesterday & a successful one. But at great cost though not so fatal to Officers. Col. Baird was killed. Capt Richardson severely wounded. Morris is all right and in command of the Reg. Go or send to Albany at once. Get a commission Col. For Smith & Major of Lt Col for Morris. Act at once and secure the commissions. Tell my wife that I am well, perfectly well Will write to her as soon as I can. F[letcher] M. Hammond
