I
have just recd your kind
letter of the 21st and as
I am about to start for
Baltimore (Baltimore, Maryland) with a squad of
Volunteers, I sit myself
by the table in the
Brainard House Reading
room to answer it.
I expect to start either
to night (tonight) or tomorrow
morning. The weather
here is quite pleasant
over head but wet & muddy
under foot. I should think
this war would close before
great while if the number
of men would have any

effect. There are about
6000 here now and they
are comeing (coming) in and we are
sending them off as fast
as we can evry (every) day
My courage holds out
pretty well and I dont
think it will be apt to
fail much as long as I
can soldier it in Elmira (Elmira, New York)
I dont mean to have it
understood though, that
my courage was on the
decline when in the field
not a bit of it. Gus Haver (Haver, Gus)
was here but his
Mother came and hung
around him two or three
days and made him
promise he would not
enlist again if she would

get him out At first
he would not hear a
word but she teased
& and bawled and [fooled]
around till she got the
promise out of him
She told him he need
not go back to that nasty
dirty Clinton (Clinton, New York) . But
would get him a situation
as Clerk in Rochester (Rochester, New York) or
Syracuse (Syracuse, New York) I forget which
George Thomas (Thomas, George) is here
also. What was the
Secretary notified of
I did not know of any
trouble here My health is very
good excepting a hard
cold which I have had
for some time. Mother
tell those two fellows

Royce (Royce) & Priest (Priest) to enquire
after me when they come
to Elmira (Elmira, New York) . I would
like to have them in
my company. I shall
have to close to go and
report to the Lieut
let me know if
Father (Pearl, George A.) get (gets) that [mufler]
I spoke of in Addie (Pearl, Adaline C.) s
letter. I expressed it
yesterday
My love to all
and respects to all
enquirers
