Near Chattachootee (Chattahoochee) River (Chattahoochee River, Georgia)
Georgia (Georgia) July 6th -64 Dear Father (Welch, Luther)
I will write a
line to you this morning
and let
you know that I
am still alive and
well
Philo (Philo)
is well too. we ar (are) getting
down near
Atlanta (Atlanta,
Georgia)
, we
can see the city from the
range of
ground where we
are now it is about eight
miles off, the rebs are
strongly fortified between
here and there, we have
captured a good
many
prisoners, some of them
were the same ones
that fought us on
the
22nd of last month.
they told us
about
our men that they took
prisoner's on that night
they described them and
by the discription (description) they
gave I am very shure (sure)
Richard Durham (Durham, Richard) was
one of the number
taken, they described him
very perfectly. they said
he was not wounded but
was all right. father (Welch, Luther) I
have sent to Daniel
Seeley (Seeley, Daniel) of Belcher (Belcher) for a
rifle I told him I
would send him the
money or you would
pay him for it. I sent
for the best quality
and I expect it will
be very high priced but
the price I care nothing
about for I want the
best rifle that can be
got, if you see him
have him send it
as soon as he possibly
can. he know's where
to express it to. which
is to Chattanooga (Chattanooga, Tennessee) and
in the name of Col.
James C Rogers (Rogers, James C. (Colonel)) . please
attend to it right away
the reason that I sent
to him for it is because
two other boy's sent to
him for some and
we want them to all
come together and he
is the best judge of
a rifle there is up
there and he will
get a good one speake (speak) to
him about getting a
receipt for the express boy
have Mother (Welch, Luther (Mrs., Phebe)) (Welch, Phebe (Mrs. Luther Welch)) be very
careful about her health
and dont you and
John (Welch, John) work to (too) hard
be careful of your
selves, but I will close
my love to all Good bye from
your Son Henry Welch (Welch, Henry)
