Dear Father (Pearl, George A.)

I title this Fort
Alex (Fort Alexander, near Newport News, Virginia)
because I am on guard [as] there
this is the second time I have been on
guard since we left Rome (Rome, New York) . It is a very
pleasant day it rained last night
which makes the air cool and the
Sun shines warm. I havnt (haven't) much
of any news to write.
I have finished drilling on Artillery for
the present so I have to do duty again
Last night Gen Banks, (Banks, Nathaniel Prentiss (General)) was here and inspected
the large guns here in the Fort they fired the
100 [fidr] twice once with a solid shot and
once a shell it takes ten pounds to a
charge. Father if it wouldnt cost too much
for [express] I would like to have you send
me a box of things some apples some
butter and cheese [yeast] cakes a loaf or
two of bread and any thing you are [mind]

too (to) anything from home would be
very acceptable. Quite a number of
the boys have recd a box from home
The Clayvill (Clayville) (Clayville, New York) people have got up a box
for the boys from there and is on its
way now. I havnt (haven't) got those gaiters yet
and I want you to send a receipt on
them so if they are lost the Rail Road (Railroad)
Co. will have to pay for them, and if you
send a box or any thing else send a receipt
I wrote to you in my last letter that
I would like to have you send me 10 dollars
I have recd no answer yet. I have just been
relived (relieved) from guard. It is three Oclock
I went on at one [Now] have two hours on
and four off there are three relieves 1st 2nd & 3rd
I am in the third. I send a letter that
I recd from John Booth (Booth, John) which I
want you to put in my desk in my room
read it if you want to. I havnt (haven't) recd
any papers from home yet have you sent
any I dont think of any more at
present give my love to all write

and my place.
