March 20th -65- Dear Father (Welch, Luther)

I will drop you a line this
morning hoping that it may find you
all well up there. I am well and trying
to pass the time off the best I can
I am busy nearly all the time
the more I have to do the faster
time passes, but it begins to hang
heavy. Eliot Burch (Burch, Eliot) is getting along
as usual, I am very very sorry to hear
of the death of the Merritt (Merritt) 's little boy
how sudden death comes, but such
is life and we should not murmer,
yet its hard to see one's friend's
laid low in the grave, I have seen
many of mine go there in the last
three year's, friends that were tried
in the firey ordeal of battle many
time's, but no more of this it makes
me feel bad to think of those
noble fellows now in their grave's.
I heard it remarked the other day
that a soldier who had passed through
battles and campaigne's had no feelings
